Frances Cook exhibits every glorious detail of staying in a floor-to-ceiling glass cabin. Plan a remote escape when your local alert levels permit

Site: Greystone Vineyard, less than an hour north of Christchurch

Style: Minimalist luxury, with your glass cabin allowing you to enjoy a 360 degree view of the Waipara vineyards and the Southern Alps.

Perfect for: A romantic weekend away from it all.

First impressions: A walk through the regenerating bush to reach your cabin sets the tone early; it’s about basking in the natural splendor of the Waipara region, with its manicured rows of vines, gentle rolling hills and crisp mountains. The glazed eco-cabin then maximizes this experience. The walls, ceiling and even the floor are all glass, although you can lower the bathroom blinds if you feel a bit exposed. Dine while watching the sun set over the vines, or lay in bed and gaze at the stars, this place is all about natural majesty.

Rooms: The eco-cabin provides everything you need for a minimalist yet extremely comfortable weekend away from it all. The main room has your bed, kitchen and dining area, or you can head out onto the terrace to sit and enjoy the view of the valley below. Glass walls allow you to soak up those views, while the secluded setting perched near the top of a hill means you don’t have to worry about anyone looking inside. You also won’t have to worry about noise, as your only companions will. be birds and your own thoughts.

Bathroom: Despite the “eco-cabin” label, don’t worry about the bathroom, which has everything you need including a flush toilet, a firm pressure shower and more of those sea views. The valley. If you’ve ever felt the urge to take a shower in nature, but you’re a bit of a chicken to remove your kit, this is the way to do it comfortably and without bug bites. A full vanity and free shampoo, conditioner, and soap mean you’re ready for any Instagram photos you want to take.

Food drink: The cabin is equipped with a gas stove and barbecue, as well as tea and coffee making facilities, so it is possible to bring your own supplies and prepare for a storm. However, you can also order a packed lunch and breakfast which I highly recommend. Dinner will include a starter from the tasting platter, then seasonal meat and vegetables to cook to your liking, and a sweet treat to follow. All the hard prep work is done, you just need to put it on the barbecue or the griddle. Pick up a bottle of wine as you walk past the door to the Greystone Wine Cellar and you will have a very pleasant relaxed evening. Departure is a luxurious 12 hour, so maybe get two bottles of wine.

Installations: The name of the game here is enjoying your natural surroundings, but you still have cooking equipment and equipment, tea and coffee, card games, and even a telescope. Luxury camping chairs let you enjoy the patio in style, while your comfy bed already comes with fresh linens.

In the neighborhood:

You’re right in the middle of Greystone Winery, so you can stop by their cellar door for a lazy lunch or wine tasting. A number of walking and biking trails cross the vineyard and other wineries, making this a great option if you’re feeling adventurous. It’s a long, unpaved drive to your PurePod, so be sure to enjoy some local Waipara wine tastings before you retire for the evening – once you’ve reached the peaceful seclusion of your cabin it you are unlikely to want to leave. From there it’s all about peace, quiet and your view across the Waipara Valley to the Alps.

Accessibility: If you have mobility issues, let them know when booking, and they may suggest an alternate route to accommodation that avoids the bush walk.

Durability: The minimalist, low-tech luxury of the eco-cabin puts sustainability a step ahead – no TVs here to chew on the electricity. Other little luxuries like underfloor heating are powered by solar panels, allowing you to enjoy your time guilt-free.
