Chantry House was a 4,000th winner for JP McManus

Cheltenham Gold Cup contender Chantry House was the 4,000th winner for principal owner JP McManus.

The 5-6 favorite beat Santini in a slow-motion Paddy Power Cotswold Chase final on the day of the Festival trials.

The hard-fought success of Nico de Boinville’s mount only sent a ripple through the Gold Cup market, with the sponsors bidding 14-1 (down from 16-1).

Chantry House received a clean bill of health after being dismounted by her jockey, who returned to the winners’ paddock alongside her.

Coach Nicky Henderson said: “It’s wonderful coaching JP’s 4,000th winner and nothing gives me more pleasure than doing this and it’s nice that it’s here in a real race at Cheltenham.

“JP has been an incredible friend and supporter and nothing makes me happier.

“We had AP’s 3,000th winner and no one dreamed then that he would get 4,000th – as we’re trying to get to 3,000 at the moment.

“I’m very lucky and I’ve always told everyone that I have the best team of owners you can have. Yes, JP has the most horses and sends us very good horses and my job is to prepare them.

Cheltenham Festival’s most successful owner, McManus, won the 2012 Gold Cup with Synchronised.

Over the years, its green and gold hoops have been worn by many top horses, including three-time Hurdle champion Istabraq.

McManus, 70, won the Grand National in 2010 with Don’t Push It, a first winner in the race for Sir Anthony McCoy.

He owns Minella Times, whose success last year was a first for a female jockey, with Rachael Blackmore in the saddle.
