‘Explosion’ at Braemar Lodge hotel as huge flames engulf building

A fire has engulfed an Aberdeenshire hotel amid reports of an ‘explosion’.

The Braemar Lodge Hotel, in Braemar, Ballater caught fire on Wednesday morning.

Fire crews have dispatched six devices to the scene while other emergency services are also present.

Police cordoned off the area and assisted hotel guests who were evacuated.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) confirmed they had been called to a report of a ‘burning shelter’.

The fire spread to a “nearby commercial building”.

Shocking footage shared with the Daily Record shows huge flames towering over the hotel.

Fire crews are spotted guarding the scene while a major police cordon has been put in place.

One of the buildings pictured appears to be completely destroyed, with firefighters still battling the blaze.

The fire is visible from nearby streets and residential areas.

Huge plumes of smoke billow from the roof of what is claimed to be the restaurant.

Worried residents watch as the fire tears through the site.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, although locals have taken to social media claiming they “heard an explosion”.

One speculated that the ‘Bunkhouse’ was on fire, self-catering accommodation on site for up to 12 people.

Another local claimed that the Bunkhouse had been “recently refurbished for the staff”.

Meanwhile, another claimed the fire had spread to the hotel’s restaurant.

West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine MP Andrew Bowie expressed shock at the news.

He wrote: “Shocked to hear of an explosion at Braemar Lodge this morning.

“Big thanks to @fire_scot and @Scotambservice who are on site and thinking of everyone involved.”

At 10:30 a.m., three hours later, firefighters were still on the scene and had no casualties to report.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘We were alerted at 7.37am on Wednesday March 16 to reports of a shed on fire in Glenshee Road, Braemar, Ballater.

“Operations Control mobilized six fire apparatus, a height vehicle and a water carrier to the scene where the fire affected a nearby commercial building.

“Firefighters are still at the scene and no casualties have been reported at this time.”

Police told the Record that as of 11 a.m. officers were still at the scene.

Cops have closed the A93 Glenshee Road Braemar with local diversions in place.

A spokesperson told The Record: ‘Emergency services are present following a fire at a hotel on Glenshee Road in Braemar which was reported at around 7.50am on Wednesday March 16.

“The occupants of the hotel were evacuated and no one was injured.

“The A93 Glenshee road is closed at Braemar and local diversions are in place.”

The Scottish Ambulance Service has been contacted for comment.
