Savvy student shares hack that saved her hundreds on college housing

A college student has gone viral after showing off her trick to saving money as a college student.

Tigerlily Taylor has taken to TikTok to reveal how she is saving money on accommodation after it was revealed that the average annual rent for purpose-built student accommodation in the UK is £7,374.

Tigerlily explained in the video that she only needed to go to college two days a week.

So to save money on accommodation, she stays in a Travelodge rather than shelling out for permanent residences.

The video gained 703.5k views and 50.9k likes with a number of students agreeing and admitting they are doing the same.

Tigerlily spoke to MoneySuperMarket and explained: ‘On average university accommodation costs £620 per month (that’s for a large bathroom). My hotel room is usually around £35 for the night and I only need to stay once a week. Every month I spend an average of £140 on a double room at the Travelodge.

She also revealed she spends an extra £30 commuting twice a week. Three days a week, she must attend university with one of those days separated from the other two. That day, she only commutes for the day.

In total, she spends £260 per month, which is a huge saving of £360 per month and £4,320 per year, if she were to live in university accommodation.

MoneySuperMarket also found out how many college towns it would work for by finding out the cost per night of the 557 Travelodges in England, Scotland and Wales for each available date in 2022.

They compared this with the new Unipol and NUS data, which examines the average cost of university accommodation in the UK. (Data was released on December 10, 2021).

In Scotland, their research indicates that the average student accommodation per week is £145.

They found that the average price per night for a Travelodge room is £49.63 and that it would work out cheaper if a student were to stay for 3 nights / 4 days maximum while studying at university.

Edinburgh Live investigated whether this was possible in Edinburgh, a city not known for its cheap rental market.

Travelodge in Edinburgh city centre, looking at a week in February from 6 for 7 nights, the room totaled up to £506.

This is a massive increase in price over CRM Edinburgh student accommodation at Meadow Court where prices start at £169 per week, for a total of £676 per month.

But if someone, like Tigerlily, doesn’t have to go to college in person every day, and only a few times a week, a standard room for one night on February 8 comes at a very reasonable price of £24.99.

Jo Thornhill of MoneySuperMarket comments: “Looking at the average cost of student accommodation compared to average Travelodge prices, there are savings to be made for students who are not required to be physically present on their college campus every days.”
