BAREILLY: Distraught at the sight of her parents trying to compromise with the family of a youth who raped her, a 14-year-old girl hanged herself to death even as ‘negotiations’ were underway in the next room.
The accused’s family had come to the girl’s home on Thursday evening along with other influential members of the village of Rampur to “make a deal” which had as a precondition the commitment of the victim’s parents that no case would be filed. or continued in the future. . The girl’s brother told TOI that they wanted to file a complaint with the police but were prevented from doing so by local community elders. “They suggested that my sister be married after a few years to the same man who raped her. A meeting was in progress. My sister was very angry. She felt cheated and insulted. She ended her life.”
